The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is a traditional holiday in China that commemorates the life and death of the famous poet and minister Qu Yuan. Celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar, this festival has a history of over 2,000 years.
One of the main customs during the Dragon Boat Festival is the racing of dragon boats, where teams of rowers paddle vigorously to the beat of drums. These colorful and ornately decorated boats symbolize the search for Qu Yuan’s body in the river after he drowned himself.
Another essential aspect of the festival is the consumption of sticky rice dumplings called zongzi. These pyramid-shaped treats are made by wrapping glutinous rice and various fillings in bamboo leaves and then steaming or boiling them. Zongzi are enjoyed as a traditional delicacy during the festival.
Additionally, people often hang up herbs like mugwort and calamus, as well as aromatic sachets, to ward off evil spirits and pests. It is believed that these practices bring good health and ward off illnesses during the summer months.
The Dragon Boat Festival is a time for families to come together, honor their heritage, and enjoy the vibrant traditions that have been passed down through generations. It is a day filled with excitement, delicious food, and cultural richness, celebrating the spirit of unity and remembrance.
